A new section has been added to our website that can help everyone - from parents and fans to players who want to better understand tennis and tennis terms in English. It is a clear Tennis Definition Dictionary, an explanatory dictionary of tennis terms...
The dictionary was written by our club member Martin Šimunič, who decided to process tennis terminology in a way that was understandable and at the same time professional. Tennis is often referred to as "physical chess" - the result is not only determined by the technique of the stroke or the tension of the string on the racket, but also by tactics, psyche and the ability to make the right decisions in a split second. That is why it is important to understand the language used to describe tennis - especially since a large part of the terminology, training terms and television commentaries are in English.
The dictionary is divided into two main pillars.
The first is the technical pillar, which explains the mechanics of strokes, the physics of the string, the transfer of energy in the player's body and the biomechanics of movement. These are the basic principles behind each rallies and which allow the player to control the speed, rotation and trajectory of the ball.
The second is the tactical pillar, which deals with decision-making on the court. It explains working with angles, positioning on the court, creating game patterns and exploiting the opponent's weaknesses. It also includes the mental side of the game - the ability to maintain concentration and master key moments of the match.
The dictionary can help anyone who wants to better understand the coach's instructions, professional broadcasts from matches or their own play on the court. Tennis is often decided by differences of a few millimeters and milliseconds - and it is precisely the precise naming of these details that helps both the player and the spectator understand what is really happening on the court.
You can find the dictionary directly on our website in the Tennis Definition Dictionary section. We believe it will help you look at tennis a little deeper – and at the same time naturally adopt the tennis language spoken on courts around the world.
